Freedom of Expression
Freedom of expression, association and assembly are part of the constituent elements necessary for the establishment of democratic societies and these freedoms should be ensured and protected both offline and online. DRN works to protect and promote these freedoms to ensure that people can express and share their views and opinions freely, assemble and associate online and offline, have access to information and enjoy free press. We are against any kind of censorship attempt in the digital space be it from the government or private sector.
Privacy and Data Protection
We are advocating and lobbying the government to enact an all-encompassing law on data protection that specifies the rights of individuals whose personal data are processed, lays down norms for cross-border transfer of personal data, ensures accountability of entities processing personal data, and provides remedies for unauthorized and harmful processing.
Safer and Secure Internet
While the ICT and the Internet has provided a wide range of opportunities for everyone to communicate, engage, learn, express ideas and innovate, it may have also increased youths and children’s exposure to risks. Here, we advocate to protect minors and youths from problematic content, cyber bullying and abuse, sexual exploitation, harassment, misuse of personal information, identity theft and fraud in the digital world.
Internet Governance
Internet governance refers to the rules, policies, standards and practices that coordinate and shape global cyberspace. The governance of the internet and internet ecosystem is very important to ensure that it continues to be guided by the principles of human rights including universality, equality and nondiscrimination. DRN strives to make the internet governance process in Nepal democratic, participatory, inclusive and multi-stakeholder.
Rights Defense Initiatives – Safeguarding Journalists
Believing that journalists should be able to carry out their work without fear of legal repercussions, we provide legal assistance, including counseling, representation, and administrative support, to journalists and media outlets facing threats and legal challenges.
Countering Hate Speech
Recognizing the damaging impact of hate speech, DRN actively engages in initiatives to counter this harmful practice. We promote responsible digital practices and advocate for policies that combat hate speech, fostering an online environment that upholds dignity and tolerance.
Combating Mis/Disinformation
In the face of the growing challenge of mis/disinformation, DRN takes proactive measures to address this issue. Our initiatives focus on promoting digital literacy, fact-checking, and responsible information-sharing practices to counter the spread of false narratives and safeguard the integrity of information online.
Digital Literacy
We prioritize digital literacy initiatives to empower individuals with the skills and knowledge needed to navigate the digital landscape safely and responsibly. Our advocacy efforts aim to enhance awareness and understanding of digital rights, ensuring a more informed and resilient online community.
Digital Rights Nepal is a not-for-profit initiative dedicated to the protection and promotion of digital rights in Nepal.
