Ireland fined 265 Million Euros to Facebook for Privacy Violation
Ireland’s Privacy Protection Commission has fined Meta, Facebook’s parent company, €265 million ($275 million) for violating EU privacy laws.
The Data Protection Commission said Meta Platforms Inc infringed sections of the EU rules, known as the General Data Protection Regulation, that require technical and organizational measures aimed at protecting user data.
The data was found on a website for hackers and included names, Facebook IDs, phone numbers, locations, birthdates, and email addresses of people from more than 100 countries, according to the reports.

NTA to Take Action Against ISPs
The Nepal Telecommunication Authority (NTA), a regulatory body, has started action against the internet service providers for violating the conditions of their license. The board meeting of NTA held on 15 November decided to take action against ISPs for charging internet fares and tariff rates of internet services contrary to the condition of the license.
NTA asked clarification from CG communication, Worldlink communication, SUBISU, Vianet Communication, Dish Media Network, etc within 15 days. Further, NTA said the authority will take action against ISPs based on their clarification on the issue.

Nagarik App and Cura Health got World Submit Award
Nepal’s domestic products, Nagarik App and Cura Health won the World Summit Award (WSA) 2022. WSA is a globally recognized platform headed by International Center for New Media that recognizes firms for their local digital innovation that improves society.
Cura Health won the WSA Award under the Health and Well-Being category, whereas Nagarik App won under Government and Citizen Engagement. Nagarik app provides all government services through a mobile app, while Cura Health is designed to digitize the health sector.

5.4 Million Twitter User’s Data Leaked Online
Amid the chaos and Twitter’s claim to improve and revolutionize the platform, about 5.4 million Twitter user records have been stolen through the internal bug. The data was further leaked to an online hacker forum. There were an additional 1.4 million Twitter profiles gathered via a different Twitter application programming interface (API) that were in addition to the 5.4 million records for sale online. These accounts were purportedly shared privately among a small group of people.

Online News portal Ukeraa website Hacked
Online news portal Ukeraa has claimed that its website is attacked by a hacker. KP Dhungana, editor of Ukeraa has confirmed that the website has been accessed by third-party illegally, and some news content and photos from the website have been deleted by the hacker. According to the editor, news related to Rabi Lamichhane, President of the Nepal Swatantra Party and Dinesh Pun, son of the Vice President are mostly affected by the attack.

NT to Distribute free E-SIM to Existing Customers
Nepal Telecom (NT), the state-owned telecom operator, has been distributing e-SIM from all its offices across the country.
According to a press statement issued on 28 November, the telecom will provide free e-SIM to their existing customers while keeping the interest and demand of customers in mind whereas new ones will be provided with e-SIM at the current selling price. NT launched its long awaited eSIM service from 16 September 2022.

Online Violence Against Women Journalist Scaled Up
A recent survey by Media Advocacy Group (MAG) found 88.6 percent women journalist faced online violence. MAG surveyed 281 women journalists working on media. According to the survey report published on 30 November, 53 percent said they had experienced violence related to the profession of journalism, while 39.2 percent said they had experienced violence from someone unrelated to the profession. Similarly, 21 percent of the participants said that the violence that started online had reached to physical assault and offline threats. The majority of the respondents said they had not yet received any training to avoid such violence.
To mitigate online violence against women journalists, strong laws and policies against online violence, digital literacy, capacity-building training, etc. are much-needed step forward.

WhatsApp Data Leaked as nearly 500 Million User Records go on Online Sale
The phone numbers of nearly 500 million WhatsApp users have reportedly been leaked, and are up for sale online. The database contains the private information of app users from 84 countries, according to a report by Cybernews. Threat actor claims there are over 32 million US user records included.

SC Issued Show Cause order to NEA for acting against Telecommunication Act
Supreme Court (SC) issues an order to show cause on 27 November in the name of Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) in response to the writ petition filed by Consumer Interest protection Forum Nepal.
The writ sought a mandamus against the NEA for cutting of the optical fiber of the internet service without permission from NTA. Telecommunication Act, 2053 mandates permission from the Nepal Telecom Authority (NTA) before causing any changes or damages on telecom infrastructure. But, NEA has been acting contrary to the telecommunication Act and consumer’s Rights.

Google Warned Millions Android Users about Cyber Attacks
Google has warned million android users about possible cyber-attack after Google found that Android device makers have not rolled out an important update made available in the summer putting people’s data at risk. Experts from the firm pointed the finger at Google itself as one of the manufacturers who have been too slow to sort it out. The company’s Project Zero team who hunt down bugs also called out Samsung, Xiaomi and Oppo. A series of problems were found in a piece of tech in some smartphones called Mali GPU.
