Two Separate High-level Discussions Conducted on ‘IT and Cybersecurity Bill’ and ‘Social Media Bill’

Earlier this week, Digital Rights Nepal (DRN) conducted two high-level discussions with Members of Parliament from both houses concerning recent developments on the Information Technology and Cyber Security Bill, 2082 and the Social Media Bill, 2081.

On 16 August, in collaboration with Accountability Lab Nepal, DRN engaged with MPs from the House of Representatives to present public concerns regarding the IT and Cyber Security Bill, 2082. The dialogue, held within the 72-hour amendment window, emphasized the importance of ensuring the bill upholds constitutional rights and complies with international human rights standards. DRN also shared its policy analysis along with amendment proposals.

Similarly, on 21 August, in collaboration with the Federation of Nepali Journalists (FNJ), DRN met with National Assembly MPs to discuss the Social Media Bill, 2081, which contains provisions affecting freedom of expression, privacy, and other fundamental rights. DRN provided its analysis and amendment proposals to ensure alignment with constitutional guarantees and international best practices.
