On December 20, Digital Rights Nepal (DRN) hosted a multistakeholder discussion titled “Data Protection in Nepal: Assessing Legal Framework and Addressing Gaps.” The event convened lawmakers, legal experts, media professionals, civil society representatives, and tech industry leaders to explore Nepal’s data protection landscape and identify critical challenges.
Key discussions emphasized the urgent need for stronger data protection laws to keep pace with rapid digitalization and safeguard citizens’ privacy. MP Manish Jha highlighted the importance of fostering a data-driven culture while addressing concerns about the misuse of public information, which could lead to reputational harm. Tara Nath Dahal, Executive Director of Freedom Forum, underscored the need to address broader data management challenges alongside data protection to establish a holistic framework.
MP Urmila Majhi called for comprehensive laws and policies to safeguard data in today’s technology-driven world, while Laxman Datta Panta, Chairperson of Media Action Nepal, warned against digitizing public services without adequate infrastructure, citing risks to their security and effectiveness. Journalist Raghunath Bajagain stressed the need for robust data recovery mechanisms and urged strengthening Nepal’s capacity to restore lost data.
Participants also debated whether Nepal should develop its own social media platform to retain data domestically, noting that such a step would require thorough analysis, debate, and expert consultation. The discussion highlighted the pressing need for robust legislation to protect data and ensure a secure digital future for Nepal.
DRN remains committed to advocating for digital rights and driving meaningful data protection reforms. Stay tuned for updates!
