The Nepal Government has recently unveiled its AI Concept Paper, marking a crucial first step in the nation’s journey toward AI regulation. Central to the development and regulation of AI is data—its availability, quality, and security. Data serves as the foundation for training AI models, making it indispensable for AI innovation. However, the reliance on vast datasets, often incorporating Personally Identifiable Data (PID), presents significant challenges, particularly regarding privacy and data protection.
As AI systems are becoming more integrated into everyday processes, the risks of data misuse, leaks, and privacy breaches escalate. Safeguarding data integrity and ensuring privacy are critical to fostering trust in AI technologies. In response to these concerns, Our Partner – EngageMedia has conducted a comprehensive study titled “Comparative Analysis of Data Protection Regulations for AI Systems in South and Southeast Asia,” which includes an in-depth evaluation of Nepal’s data protection regulatory framework.
To further this dialogue and gather inputs on the draft report, Digital Rights Nepal and EngageMedia jointly organized a stakeholder discussion to review the study’s findings and gather insights on the data protection regime in Nepal. We hope that this study will be of immense value while developing AI policies and laws in Nepal.
