As Nepal navigates a complex digital landscape, concerns around civic space are growing—with journalists, digital activists, and civil society actors experiencing increasing challenges related to privacy, expression, and participation. In response, Digital Rights Nepal (DRN) and the Digital Rights Action Group (DRAG), with the support of International Center for Not-for-Profit Law (ICNL), hosted a Digital Rights UPR Stakeholder Consultation on 20 June 2025 in Lalitpur.
The consultation brought together diverse voices from civil society to inform Nepal’s submission on digital rights for the upcoming Universal Periodic Review (UPR) at the UN Human Rights Council.
📌 Key issues discussed included:
-Online freedom of expression & censorship
-Privacy, surveillance & data protection
-Internet access, shutdowns & connectivity
-Disinformation & content regulation
-Digital inclusion of marginalized communities
This initiative aims to ensure that the evolving digital rights landscape in Nepal is reflected in global human rights processes, and that the experiences of citizens are meaningfully captured in the UPR.
🙏 Thank you to all participants for your valuable insights and contributions. Together, we’re helping amplify Nepal’s digital rights narrative on the global stage.
